💡 Quick Answer: Multi-accounting in Matched Betting

Opening multiple accounts under different names (gnoming or multi-accounting) is possible. Legally, it’s a grey area, and it’s also against most bookmakers’ terms. This is why you need to employ some tricks, including:

  • Use a VPN
  • Set up a separate bank account
  • Amazon Marketplace
  • Establish different betting behaviours
  • Pay taxes

Disclaimer

If you open multiple accounts with the same bookmaker, you do so at your own risk. I don’t recommend multi-accounting. This post aims to provide an overview so you can stay as safe as possible whatever you decide to do.

Bookmakers can suspend your accounts if they suspect fraud. In this case, you may not get your betting funds back.

What Is Matched Betting With Multiple Accounts?

Matched betting is a tax-free way to make money from home in your own time. It is not gambling but involves placing sports bets and laying them at an exchange. Typically, you open accounts in your name with one account per bookmaker.

Matched betting with multiple accounts means opening multiple accounts with the same bookmaker. There are two ways this can work:

  • Opening the second account in your name
  • Gaining permission from someone else and opening an account in their name

Most people choose the second option.

What Is Gnoming?

Gnoming is the professional term for doing matched betting with multiple accounts. I searched for the origin of the name, but all I could find was that gnoming means stealing garden gnomes. That’s not what we are doing!

Matched betting is legal in all countries that allow sports betting. All you do is place bets like ordinary punters. Using multiple accounts is a different story. From a legal perspective, there is no law against it, so it’s not a crime. I can’t guarantee this will be the same for you, and I don’t give legal advice. You should always proceed with caution.

Creating multiple accounts is against every bookmaker’s terms. If exposed, the bookmaker will ban you, and you might not get your funds back.

If you make an account in the name of another person, they can accuse you of fraud. You must have the individual’s written permission. Only ask people you are sure you can trust. The person you’re imposing can blackmail you, threatening to report you for fraud if you do not do what they say.

Risks of Matched Betting With Multiple Accounts/Gnoming

Matched betting with multiple accounts is not without risks. Before proceeding, ask yourself whether the potential profit is worth it. Risks include:

  • The bookmaker may close your accounts as you violate their terms. You may lose money as they do not have to return your funds.
  • The bookmaker can close your original account. You’ll lose potential profits from the offers you cannot complete any more.
  • The person you impersonate can withdraw your bankroll and keep it. You would be unable to take any action against this.
  • You could get prosecuted for fraud. The person in whose name you are acting may claim you do not have their permission.
  • You may risk fines if you do not pay tax on your earnings from any additional set of accounts.
  • The stress may impact your mental health.
  • If the person you impersonate commits a crime, police could link you to it. They’ll see the frequent transactions between your accounts.

Alternatives to Matched Betting With Multiple Accounts

Matched betting with multiple accounts is a way to make more money from matched betting. However, it is also quite an effort. There are easier ways to increase your profits that you should try first:

Outplayed helps you diversify and complete more offers. You can make more profit without multi-accounting. Outplayed Pro helps matched bettors to make £1000 or more monthly.

Matched Betting With Multiple Accounts/Gnoming Guide

When multi-accounting, you need to decide on your approach. You can open accounts with your same name or use another person’s name.

1. Accounts in Another Person’s Name

If you open accounts in another person’s name, you must get their permission. Otherwise, you are committing a crime. You’ll be found out quickly because of the frequent transfers between accounts.

Consent is mandatory. You need to explain to the other person:

  • What you are doing
  • What the risks are
  • How you’ll split the profit
  • What documents you need (for account verification)

There are different arrangements. Some matched bettors give the person they place the bets for a percentage of their profit. In contrast, others pay a fixed sum every month. A percentage fee is usually better because your profits vary every month.

2. Accounts in Your Name

If you open multiple accounts with the same bookmaker, you must use different details. Obviously, you can’t change your name and your birth date.

It is not worth forging your documents. Not only are you committing a serious crime, but the profits do not outweigh the risk. Instead, focus on the details you can control. For your second account, you should use a different:

  • Address
  • Email address
  • Bank account
  • Identification (e.g. driver’s license instead of passport)
  • Internet protocol (IP) address
  • Device (e.g. mobile phone instead of a computer)

Opening accounts in your own name is a game with limited time. You’ll eventually be found out, so you need to make money quickly and withdraw.

Setup for Multi-accounting

1. Use a VPN

You must use a different internet protocol (IP) address to avoid detection. In simple terms, an IP address is the name of your computer used to identify it online. Bookmakers can see it and will become suspicious if two accounts use the same IP address.

To use different IP addresses, you need a virtual private network (VPN). A VPN replaces your IP address so you can use different IP addresses for different accounts. This may sound technical, but a VPN is easy to set up. Start with comparing the most popular providers.

2. Remove Tracking Software

Bookmakers install tracking software on your device without your knowledge. This is annoying for ordinary matched bettors but dangerous for those who do gnoming. You can use the free software CCleaner to check for tracking software such as IEsnare.

3. Set up a Separate Bank Account

Bookmakers only allow deposits from bank accounts in the account holder’s name. This is to prevent fraud and money laundering.

The easiest way around this is to set up a PayPal account in the name of the person you act on behalf of. You can transfer money to this PayPal account and deposit it at the bookmaker. However, depositing with PayPal excludes you from promotions.

A better option is to open an account with one of the best banks for matched betting. You can control that account (with the other person’s permission).

Monzo is the most popular choice for a matched betting bank account. It is phone-based, easy to set up, and accepts gambling transactions.

4. Get the Documents Ready

Bookmakers often ask for verification before you can use an account. Ask the person you are acting on behalf of for:

  • Photo of passport or ID card
  • Proof of address
  • Recent bank statement
  • Photo of them holding their passport or ID

5. Decide on Betting Behaviours

For each set of accounts, you should behave differently, including:

  • Betting at different times
  • On different outcomes
  • For different promotions

A different pattern makes you look like different people. For this, mug bets are essential. They may help you establish a different betting profile for each set of accounts.

6. Use the Same Betting Exchanges

Exchange accounts don’t care what you do. Matched bettors are great for them because they are pumping money into their markets. The more you bet, the better it is for them.

You can lay bets from your second account at your main exchange account. You only need one set of exchange accounts.

7. Pay Taxes

Matched betting is tax-free in the UK, as your income is gambling winnings. However, if you are matched betting on behalf of someone else, you are no longer a matched bettor. You are a service provider. As such, you must pay tax on your matched betting income.

In the UK, there is a tax-free allowance of £1000 per year. To avoid having to declare your income, you must stay below that allowance.

Personally, I don’t know anyone who reports their income from multi-accounting. However, that doesn’t make it any less illegal. If you don’t pay tax, you must accept the risk of being fined or going to jail.

Matched Betting With Multiple Accounts (Gnoming) Summary

Matched betting with multiple accounts, or gnoming, can double or triple your profits. However, it is also associated with risks and considerable effort. You should think twice before you venture into multi-accounting. I do not recommend or endorse it.

If you want to do matched betting with multiple accounts, you need to:

  • Install a VPN
  • Remove tracking software from your computer
  • Set up a separate bank account
  • Get the documents ready
  • Behave differently on different sets of accounts
  • Read up on tax implications
