Hi, I'm Jen! I'm a personal finance expert and money coach aiming to help you take control of your money. I went from being broke to a six-figure net worth and am now on track to be financially independent at age 40. Discover Jen's story
This Topia App review covers everything about this financial independence app. You’ll learn about its features, pros and cons, and whether it’s worth using.
I started my journey to financial freedom in 2019. I’ve reached 33% of my FI number (the amount I need never to have to work again). I’m curious whether an app can help me reach my goal faster. Topia seems promising, as you can see in the review below.
What Is Topia App?
Topia is a free app that helps you journey to financial independence. It teaches you how to escape the rat race you might be trapped in.
People often use spreadsheets to:
- Monitor their investments
- Track their progress
- Model their financial future
You don’t need to do this, but knowing your financial situation helps you plan your future. You can also identify areas that need improvement.
If you track your progress, you can reach financial independence faster. Yet, not everyone is a spreadsheet geek. That is where Topia comes in and does the hard work for you.
Is Topia App Legit and Safe?
The Topia app is safe to use. One of Topia’s advantages is that the app is automated. You link your accounts, and Topia syncs with them to keep your progress up-to-date.
Linking your accounts is easy. Select your provider or search for your institution. Log in via the app, and Topia does the rest. Not all providers can be linked. To keep your data safe, Topia:
- Never stores any of your login details
- Uses 256-bit encryption to connect to your institute
- Is registered with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Being authorised by the FCA means that it complies with FCA regulations.
- Is compliant with the ICO
Topia gains access to your financial details via open banking. Their partner for this is Plaid Financial Limited. Plaid is an established company with its own FCA authorisation.
Topia App Structure
The app has four sections:
- Freedom
- Tinkering
- Investment rate
- Community
Freedom
This is the main section of the Topia app. You can see and monitor your progress and add your investments and debts.
Dashboard

When you open the app, the Freedom tap displays which steps of your financial independence plan you should be focusing on. It also shows your net worth and a countdown.
Your time to financial independence is calculated based on your input. You can adjust the target withdrawal rate, monthly spending, and income. You can also include your partner in the calculation.
Steps to Financial Independence
Topia breaks down the journey to financial independence into several steps. The issue with this is that the journey to financial independence is unique for everyone. It is hard to standardise a process that differs for everyone.
For example, I am already far into my journey but haven’t achieved step 1 in the Topia App. I have a 0%-interest loan, so there is no need to pay it off early. Topia also assumes everyone wants to save for a house deposit and invest in the stock market.
While a step-by-step guide is helpful, the lack of customisation means some people may find it confusing.
Savings, Investments, and Debts

Topia enables you to add your assets either automatically or manually. I recommend linking your accounts so you do not have to update manually all the time.
Each entry you make in this section is customisable. You can specify different growth rates for each account. Its great analysis features make Topia one of the best budgeting apps.
Tinkering With Your Financial Independence Journey

The Tinker section lets you add different scenarios. You can play with the numbers and see what happens if you change variables, including:
- Increase your income
- Decrease your monthly expenses
- Have a salary increase
- Buy a house
- Have a child
- Work one day less
- Take six months off work
- Start a side hustle
- Receive an inheritance
- Create a custom event
Investment Rate
The Investment Rate section only works when you link your bank account. You can select which entries constitute your income on your bank statement. Topia then uses these data to calculate your investment rate. The investment rate is similar to the savings rate. It’s based on your income, investments, and expenses.
Topia Community
The Topia community is accessible without downloading the app. You’ll find explanations for the steps for reaching financial independence and can ask questions.
Topia App Review Summary
Topia aims to help people reach financial independence by providing a roadmap and tracking tools. The app is new but FCA authorised.
Topia lets you plan your financial journey without complex spreadsheets. This could make financial independence accessible to more people.
